Surrender.
It’s been a while. This refreshed blog is hopefully the first in a fresh run of posts offering thoughts on some images I have painted since 2021.
Back to it:
HEAVEN TONIGHT. 2024. watercolor, gouache, acrylic, ink & graphite on Arches paper. 22.5 x 30 inches.
What in the apocalyptic man-cave is going on here?
On my end, I hugged some Cheap Trick lyrics tight to produce a tableaux of intergenerational contemplation and understanding.
The kids are alright and the folks aren’t as conventional as you think:
Mother told me, yes, she told me
I'd meet girls like you
She also told me, "Stay away
You'll never know what you'll catch"
Just the other day I heard
Of a soldier's falling off
Some Indonesian junk
That's going 'round
Mommy's alright
Daddy's alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Hey, hey
Father says, "Your mother's right
She's really up on things
Before we married, Mommy served
In the WACS in the Philippines"
Now, I had heard the WACs recruited
Old maids for the war
But mommy isn't one of those
I've known her all these years
Whatever happened to all this season's
Losers of the year?
Every time I got to thinking
Where'd they disappear?
But when I woke up, Mom and Dad
Are rolling on the couch
Rolling numbers, rock and rollin'
Got my KISS records out
What if Mom and Dad were cool big cats lounging on the couch, just like junior relaxes on his Corbusier chaise lounge, taking in new tunes on an old Victrola? In her extended sunset, I’ve found Mom was a lot like me, and me her - just looking for someplace, sometime, somewhere, quiet to reflect. Maybe mid-century is where we could meet in the middle.
